The tax payera of Washtenaw county, who must foot thebills, will be interested in knowing what the Ric:hard 's trial cost this county, and what were the items of expense which went to make up the whole. The Register has gone to considerable trouble daring the past week to ascertain, as 'ar as po8sible, what was the total cost of this trial and what were the real items which go to make up the expense of euch a proceeding. It does not pretend that it has been able in every case to secure the exact figures. In each case, however, where it has been impossible to obtain exact figures, we have included what was actually expended. In many cases we believethat a more systematic and thorough investigation than we were able to make would reveal additional expenses that were incurred in the prosecution of this case. However the sum total, as we have it would appear to be sufiiciently large to satisfy the tax payers of this county. Here are the items of expense as nearly as the Register was able to obtain them: Expense of looking up evidence for hearing In Justice court and in Circuit court 44X98 Subpoenaing witnesses for Justice court 60.53 Witness fees in Justice court 56.30 Stenographer's fee in Justice court 40.00 Justice fee 9.20 Subpoenalng wltnosses for Circuit court trial 251.10 Jail expenses of the three prisoners, includlng board, washiug, and taking prisoners to and from Jail during trial 139.50 Witness fees and mlleage in Circuit court trial 513.85 Mileage and fees of trial jurors d uring trial 548.00 Pees of offlcers while attcnding trial jury 84.00 Board of jury and attendante durln trial 203.00 Fees of all otherjurors during time of trial 583.00 Fees of sheriff and deputies for-attendance at court during time of trial 135.00 Fees of offlcersi in striking and sumïnoulug two extra panels óf jurors C3.00 Fees of Juslices in striking two extra panels of jurors 6.00 Expense of liveryfor jury to visit Richard's farm 10.00 Llvery. bilis of offlcers from time of arrest to close of trial and not included in deputies foes 51.75 BUI for photographs 25.00 Board of Mrs. Larkins ;whlle retained as wltness 2.'. 00 Fee of A. J.Sawyer 500.00 Total Ï4031.31 Although this would seem amply large, it is quite probable that th ;re were many other expenses connected with the caso about. which it has been impossible for U8 to learn in the brief time we have, had to investig-ate 1his matter. It would be a conservative estimate to state that the trial of the Richard's suspects cost Washtenaw county not Ie3s thao $4,500, -or about $400 per day for the time taken in trying ttie case.
