Alphonse Daudet, the famous Freneh author, died very suddenly whlle dining with his family at I'aris. Will Leaf, wliile hunting near Coldwater, was accidentally shot by a friend aud his leg shattered. Seven carloads of fino lumber has been shippcd to Argentine Republic by the Sagiuaiv Salt & Co. Theodore Durrant was sentenced at San Francisco to be hanged on Jan. 7 for the murder of Manche Lamont. Washington Hesing, ex-postmaster of Chicago, and one of the most popular Demócrata of the west, died suddenly at his home at Chicago. The date of the national encatnpïnent of the G. A. R. at Cincinnati has been fixed for the week beginning September 5, 1898. One of the intercsling items in the agricultural appropiiation bill before congress is a provisión for 310,000 for an agricultural experiment station in Alaska. Mrs. Jennie June Croly, famous throughout the country as a worker and writer for women's clubs, has been appointed an inspector of public schools in Greater New York. According to a special dispatch f rom Shanghai the Germán government contemplates colonizing the province of Shan-ïuug with Germán families and making Kiao-Chau an open port. John Redmond, the famous Irish member of the British parliamcnt, will visit America in January to arouse the enthusiasm of Irish-Americans in the pilgrimage to Ireland next July to celébrate the centennial of the rebellion of 1798. The convention of business men which met in Indianapolis last January and authorized the appointment of the monetary cominission, will be called together ag-ain at Indianapolis, Jan. 25, ïor thé purpose of consideringthe eommission's report. The residencc of Patriek Leahy at Ottawa, Ont. , burned at an early houv and Leahy and five of his children, Thomas, Marie, Katie, Maggie and Patrick, the eldest but 9 years of age, perished. Mrs. Laahy and one boy, Frank, aged 5, escaped. Patrolraan Russell caught a pair of footpads holding up a citizen at Chicago. The crooks started to run wtaen Russell shot one dead. He was identified as Chas. Casler, of Buffalo, N. Y. The chief of pólice promoted Russeil within an hour after the shooting. Two or three attempts are alleged to have been made to blow up the U. S. consulate at Havana, the latest occurring last week when an infernal machine filled with explosives was found in the building. The consulate is now guarded by Spanish soldiers and pólice. A dispatch f rom Christiania, Norvvay, says the political situation since the failure of the united committee on foreign affairs has become critical, and it is feared that Svveden will seek an occasion for arnif.d intervention in Norway. The Swedish press hopes for assistance frorn Germany. Mormous are invadiug southem Michigan in force. Ruiz had been warned by the insurgen ts of th; orders of Gómez, but he persisted in m;iking his way into the insurgents camps. The first definite announcement of 1he progress of the big drainage canal to connect Lake Michigan and the Illinois river states that it will be completed in the fall of 1890. So far it lias cost $25,000,000.
