"Julia," asked the tall girl who had just descended the elevated stairs, of the frie-nd whom she met at the corner, "do I look like any particular kind of rtprobate? Because I've just been taken for one, and the moral of it all is to me, 'Don't volunteer any Information to strangers in the cara.' " Then, taking pity upon the utterly mystified expression of Julia's face, the alleged repróbate proceeded to explaJn the situaüon, says the New York Tribune. "You see," she said, "at 23d street a nice-looking old lady got into the train and happened to sit down by me. I noticed that she watched every station sign as if she were afrald she would not get out at the right place, and lïnally, when we were at about 59th street, I think, she asked the guard to teil her the nearest station to 74th street. He didn't seem to pay much attention to her- perhaps he didn't hcar her- so I thought I would be piolita and offer my services. " 'I am goit:2 beyond thi. ;,' madam, I said, 'and I s'.iall be glad to &ee that you get off at 72d street, which is the nearest for you.' "Well, she thanked me, and then she began to look me over from bead to foot. Just as I was getting rather nervous at this, and wondcring what could possibly be wrong with my cloilies, she pulled out a littlo pamp'ulet from her satchel and ofïered it to me. Julia, what do you think it was! A traet, as sure as I'm alive! 1 stared at it and than at her. Then a eonfused idea that she might be selling these for the benefit of some charity occurred to me, and I began to open my purSe. 'Ne, no,' sho said, in a rather grieved tone, 'salvation is free.' 'Oh - er - yes, of course,' I murmured, trying to apologize, but she went right on: 'I always carry a supply of these little leaflets with me, and make a practice of distributing them' - here she looked at me harder than ever - 'where I think they will do the most good!' 'Thls is 72d street, where you want to get out,' was all I needed to say just then, and you may be sure I said it. But you see it all came of my speaking to her in the first place. Well, we live to learn. G-ood-by," and she hurried off across town.
