Many Washtenaw county residents have fond memories of the "Little Red Schoolhouse," and this scene in front of the Sutton School at Joy Road and Pontiac Trail on a May day in 1950 helps explain why. The trees just coming into blossom...flag pole...bell on the roof...three boys in a "cops and robbers" game at left...the old pump producing always cool, refreshing water - all of these were associated with the country school, now rapidly disappearing from the Michigan scene. The Sutton School was 75 years old when this picture was taken. It is still there today, but it is a residence now and has an addition on the front.
