Friday November 13, 2020: 7:00pm to 8:00pm
Presented by the Summer Festival and the Ann Arbor District Library, the Not Too Close events took place in August 2020 in select city parks.
Detroit jazz singer Joan Belgrave is a world class talent and a storied entertainer. She was singing at neighborhood parties from the time she was three, and from there she grew into a life of music. Her debut album Emotions Blue (a tribute to jazz vocal legend Billie Holliday) was released in 1998, and since then she has produced seven albums centered around her vibrant, soul-stirring vocals. Belgrave is known for her vibrant jazz singing but is able to bring something special to any style she touches, often covering gospel, blues, big band and contemporary R&B .
In addition to working with noted jazz figures like Geri Allen, Regina Carter, Charlie Gabriel and many others, she has also collaborated with big names in the rock and pop world and even with Detroit techno legend Carl Craig. Her travels around the world have taken her to historic venues like Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, The Detroit Opera House and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in New York and she’s bowled over crowds at Toronto Jazz Festival, Jazz à la Villette in Paris, and The Ascona Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
The Summer Festival worked closely with the City of Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation Department to deliver this socially distanced concert. In accordance with the governor’s executive orders at the time, attendance was capped at 100 people for each event.
