Staff Picks: Family Movies (that adults enjoy too!)

by emjane

Winter is prime for movie nights, and whether or not you have kiddos in your life, it’s worth picking a flick that everyone can like!

The Mitchells vs. The Machines Request on DVD | Request on Blu-Ray

The Mitchells vs. The MachinesBudding filmmaker Katie is ready to head to college and get some space from her kind, but overbearing dad, Rick. When Rick decides at the last minute that the entire family should road-trip to take Katie to school, it seems like it can’t get worse. But then the robots come.

Perhaps predictably, fighting to avoid the robot uprising brings the family together. But this isn’t a movie you watch for the surprise ending. Instead, it’s about the laughs and action along-the-way.

Rated PG. 1 hour, 54 minutes.

Coco Request on DVD | Request on Blu-Ray

CocoYoung Miguel is an aspiring musician, but due to his family’s ban on music, he must learn guitar in secret. When his grandmother Coco discovers him practicing for a talent show and destroys his guitar, Miguel “borrows” a guitar from the mausoleum of a famous musician (who MAY be his grandfather). However, playing the guitar shifts Miguel from the land of the living, to one where he is able to see and interact with his dead ancestors.

We watch Miguel grapple with his familial relations (both living and dead) in an absolutely gorgeously animated world with an engaging soundtrack. Don’t be ashamed to feel the story and reach for tissues!

I limited myself to only one Pixar film, but my word do they have a catalog that fills the need of movies both kids and adults can enjoy. Other favorites are Up, Soul, and Inside Out.

Rated PG. 1 hour, 45 minutes.

The Lego Movie Request on DVD | Request on Blu-Ray

The Lego MovieYes, the song “Everything is Awesome” will play on-loop in your brain for a week, but it’s worth it to jump into the zany Lego world. Protagonist Emmet is thrust from his everyday existence into the life of someone special: the holder of the “Piece of Resistance.” As Emmet and his compatriots attempt to use this piece to fulfill a prophesy and stop evil wizard Vitruvius’ plan, the viewer is treated to ample jokes and nostalgic settings of Lego kits past.

Lots of silliness pairs great with a bowl of popcorn! And it’s an even better experience if you’ve got a big bin of Legos to play with afterward!

Rated PG. 1 hour, 40 minutes.

The Princess Bride Request on DVD  | Request on Blu-Ray

The Princess BrideIt’s a classic for a reason! Watching Westley and Buttercup journey through the kingdom of Florin, overcoming obstacles to live together in love is just as enjoyable in your 30s as it was in your 10s (or at least has been in my experience!)

The Princess Bride takes on the epic fantasy journey while peppering it with humor to temper the danger and tension often overwhelming to younger viewers in more traditional fantasy narratives.

Don’t feel like watching a movie? William Goldman’s book, on which the film was based, is also an utter delight.

Rated PG. 1 hour, 38 minutes.
