Description

Greta Uehling will be discussing her new book, Everyday War: the Conflict Over Donbas, Ukraine. Dr. Uehling will speak about civilians' capacity to deliver comfort and care in spite of military conflict. Drawing upon her research in Ukraine, and utilizing stories from her interviews, she will explore the only seemingly mundane practices that emerge from moral thinking about human vulnerability and relatedness in landscapes filled with military conflict. Dr Uehling will be joined in conversation by John Vsetecka.

Greta Uehling holds a PhD in cultural anthropology from the University of Michigan. In 2004, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship with the Solomon Asch Center for the Study of Ethnopolitical Conflict at the University of Pennsylvania. Her first book is Beyond Memory: The Deportation and Repatriation of the Crimean Tatars. Her forthcoming book is Everyday War: The Conflict over Donbas, Ukraine. She is also the author of numerous scholarly articles and the editor of two edited volumes.

John Vsetecka is a PhD Candidate in the Department of History at Michigan State University where he is finishing a dissertation on the aftermath of the 1932-1933 famine (Holodomor) in Soviet Ukraine. He is the founder and co-editor of H-Ukraine, part of the larger H-Net online platform, which shares and promotes scholarly and intellectual content related to the study of Ukraine. During the 2021-2022 academic year, John was in Kyiv conducting research as part of a Fulbright grant before relocating to Warsaw, Poland due to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Currently, John is the humanities advisor for the New Jersey-based Ukrainian History and Education Center’s forthcoming museum exhibit on artistic responses to the Holodomor. He also serves as an academic advisor to the forPeace Ukraine Relief Project team, which works to support Ukraine through numerous humanitarian initiatives.
