POWER SOURCE: Bell switchman William G. Sanford of Ann Arbor fills with water one of a bank of 48-volt batteries that furnish power to phones in users' homes and elsewhere. Other banks of batteries are in background. In the event that power is cut off to generators that charge the batteries, a 170-kilowatt diesel-generator may be "cut-in."
