Traverwood Branch: Program Room

Join history instructor Peter Boykin from Wayne County Community College District for a presentation about his Great Great Grandfather, Johnson Chesnut Whittaker.

Johnson Chesnut Whittaker was one of the first African Americans to matriculate at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1876. In 1880, he was injured in a racist attack by three fellow cadets, and was accused of staging the attack. He was found guilty in an 1881 court martial but was later exonerated and went on to to become a lawyer and high school principal. His story inspired a book and a TV movie to be made about his court-martial almost a century later.
