Languages of the World: German

Saturday January 20, 2024: 1:00pm to 2:00pm  Add to Calendar /   Add to Google Calendar

Downtown Library: Multi-Purpose Room

Come and learn about the German language, its dialects, interesting word histories, and what makes German unique. How did frankfurters and hamburgers get into English? Why are German words like "Nahrungsmittelunverträglichkeit" so long? And did Kennedy really say "I'm a jelly donut" when he expressed solidarity with West Berlin? This is not a language tutorial, but you will learn a few basic words and phrases in German.

Presented by UM Lecturer Iris Zapf-Garcia (Germanic Languages and Literatures).
