Description

Join us for a special presentation by Professor Tze-Lan Sang of Michigan State University.

Taiwan (The Republic of China) is the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage. What role has literature played in fostering a sexually more tolerant society? In this talk we will revisit the development of LGBTQ+ literature in Taiwan from the 1990s to the present, focusing especially on the female homoerotic imaginary in lesbian classics such as Notes of a Crocodile and recent award-winning titles such as Taiwan Travelogue.

Taiwan Literature Exhibition: Reading Taiwan is on display on the 2nd Floor of the Downtown Library from September 22nd, 2025-January 9th, 2026.

This event is in partnership with the Taipei Cultural Center in New York and the Michigan Taiwanese American Organization.
