A prfrptjsal "forfóur innovad tive programs was approved by the Board of Education last night. Ivan Bare, director of governmental relations, presented the proposal for review before being submitted to the U.S. Office of Education for funding. Four centers will be featured including Learning Disabilities Diagnostic - Prescriptive Center, Environmental Interpretive Center, Gommunity Classroom Center and an Educational Diversification Center. According to Bare's report, although each center will opérate largely on its own, a headquarters unit will coordínate the total project efforts and objectives. "The Learning Disabilities Ceníer will provide a linkage between school staff and specialists at the University and will also involve citizen's association for children with disabilities," he said. "One of the major activities of this center will be the creation of individualized reading and language development programs for disabled learners." The Environmental Center - - - will provide direct involvement in and understanding ecological issues for students. Student's concept of "community" is tó be expanded under the Community Classroom proposal. School staff, the Ann Arbor Model Cities Program, and segments of the city's business and industrial community will work together to give students a stronger background in the working world through an emphasis of school programming on community resources. The Educational Diversification Center focuses on implementing improvements in the present program structure and trying out new programs, such as the extended school year design. Bare says that this center would be somewhat of a "try-out lab" for the district. These four proposals will be submitted for approval for funding by the federal government. Under the Title III of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, grants are awarded on a highly competitive basis and may be extended up to three years._
