Suspended Teacher Files With State, Rights Group
A complaint alleging "unI fair suspension" has been filed against the Ann Arbor School District with the Michigan Civil Rights Commission I by Rebecca Vanderhorst. In her complaint Miss Vanderhorst stated: "I have taught in the Ann Arbor School system since September, 1969, and I have been active in black affairs and have been accused by members of the school board, the administration, and some of my colleagues of being a 'olack militant.' "I am a black teacher dedicated to the uplift of black people through active endeavors to eradicate the impact of white racism on young black minds and I believe I was unfairly suspended because of my race." School officials said Miss Vanderhorst was suspended on Feb. 3 for "causing student - teacher misunderstanding and unrest and contributing to the disruption of a learning environment."
