Officials' Moving Costs Questioned

A motel charge l $240 included in the moving expenses of a new Ann Arbor school administrator from Philadelphia was questioned last night by Board of Education Trustee Paul Carrington. ín a recommendation from School Supt. R. Bruce McPherson for compensation of relocation costs for three administrators, the motel bilí was included in the $694.15 moving bilí for Steven Daniels, director of curriculum planning. McPherson told Carrington the bilí was incurred when Daniels was unable I to move immediately into housing here I and this situation feil within the requireI ments and procedures of the recently apI proved policy. The total relocation costs for Daniels, ' Forsythe Principal Fred Leonard and William Wade, director of iinance, was $3,656.46. The total amount used from the $12,000 relocation budget before these costs was $6,000. There was also some question over the assumption of Wade's costs of $691.99 cause he was already employed within the district and decided to relocate in Ann Arbor from Livonia. Trustee Henry Johnson commented that the board should assume his costs because it benefits the schools to have its administrators living in the district where they are employed. He also said that anytime a move is made to Ann Arbor the person obviously must suffer some loss from the high cost of living here. A difference of opinión was expressed, however, by Trustee Cecil Warner who said that most companies do not assume the cost of moving employés after they have been employed. Wade was appointed controller of the Ann Arbor Schools Jan. 25, 1971. He was recently named director of finance under McPherson's reorganization. The board adopted a policy for the assumption of relocation costs for administrators on Aug. 3. Action on this recommendation will be taken at the board's next regular meeting.
