Pioneer II, the experimental "free school" established by the Ann Arbor Board of Education last month, will hold its opening sessions Monday in Jones School on N. Division, not in the Fritz building as previously planned. Hours for the new school will be 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Classes will be in the Jones School gym, with an enrollment of 108. The Fritz building requires "very extensive" work on "a long list" of items in order to satisfy state safety requirements for schools, Inspector Charles J. Osborn of the city fire marshal's office reported. He said a detailed report will be sent to school officials Monday. Assistant Fire Chief Frederick J. Sehmid commented that the Fritz building "was allowed to go into disuse about 10 years ago" because of the problems found again yesterday. Arrangements for the last minute switch in locations were made by Steven Daniels, director of curriculum planning for the local schools. He expressed regret that students moved about 20,000 public library books from storage in Fritz School to Jones School before it was learned classes cannot be held at Fritz. Possibilities for making the Fritz building usable will be studied, he added.
