Pioneer II Starts Monday With 108 Students Enrolled
Pioneer II, an experiment in alternative education for Pioneer High school students, will begin Monday with 108 students. G i v i n g an enrollment breakdown, School Supt. R. Bruce McPherson told Board of Education members last night that three of the students are black, two are oriental and 103 are white. Enrollment originally was set at 100 but all trustees were in favor of accomodating as many students as possible until a decisión on the optimum level is reached. Trustee Heriry Johnson reiterated his views concerning more minority representation for a multi-ethnic experience. During the last board meeting, Johsnon expressed criticism of the Pioneer II "free school" for its lack of black participation. "There is still not a minority enrollment that represents district-wide age? Johr.son said. "I'm still concerned about the small number of minority persons involved in the planning, the program and the dissemination of Pioneer II, because it still falls short in these areas." The Pioneer II school will be located in the Fritz Building on N. Maple Rd. and will be staffed by community resource people and certified teachers. Pioneer II, school officials say, will provide a structure in which students can learn from each other; will be a school without walls, where the environment in which students are encouraged to learn is greatly expanded; will be a learning centered educatipn which will allow the individual to work according lo his own abilities. Students attending the school will receive full academie credit. The Curriculum generally will be determined by the student body.
