LANSING - The State Board of Education has b a c k e d off from opposing legislation which would undercut Board efforts to take over regulation of high school athletics. Plans of the Board to take over most of the powers now held by the Michigan High 'SChóol' TSGïletic Ásárfclátion have touched off heavy criticism among local school administrators and many legislators. The Board insists it still intends to carry out the ' m, ■■■irMtwM ganization, but it decided at itsl meeting Wednesday not to oppose at this time two bilis which allow the MHSAA to continue to control varsity sports. Board members said they should delay taking a position on the legislation until they have time to review testimony at five public hearings held by the Board on the proposed reorganization. Board action isn't expected until the later part of November or the first meeting in December.
