Board Oks Job Training Proposal
A career education planning proposal.which the superintendent termed ' ' a n opportunity for all students," was approved by the Ann Arbor Board of Education last night. The proposal recommended by School Supt. R. Bruce McPherson requested that the board approve the expenditure of $2,000 for the contracted services budget of his office as this district's assessed contribution to the career education plan. "This trend will shape a new framework for the schools," said McPherson. The objectives of the program are to acquaint all youth with the world of work; to provide young adults with opportunities for developing salable skills and abilities to get jobs; and to provide employed persons with opportunities for improving through training. In October the Michigan Department of Education Vocational Education and Career Service divided Michigan i n t o 49 Career Education Planning Districts. W a s h tenaw County is one of the districts. The program was developed to assure joint planning between local education agencies to have a comprehensive and relevant program within the reach of all people in the state. The state plan calis for the appointment of a career education district coördinator and the $2,000 approved by the board will be the local school district's share of the salary for this position. The remainder of the expense will come from state funds, Washtenaw Community College and the Intermedíate School District.
