Judge Weighs Taking Over Counselor Case
DETROIT - U. S. Federal District Court Judge Robert DeMascio took under advisement a petition by a black Ann Arbor Pioneer High School counselor that a criminal charge against her be moved to his court. Mrs. Shirley Gulley, 29, of 1385 Harpst St., was one of seven persons arrested j Nov. 11 during a racial disturbance at Pioneer High School. The other six persons taken into custody were Pioneer students. In her' petition, Mrs. Gulley contends Ann Arbor pólice when they arrested her on a charge of resisting and interfering with an officer prevented her from performing her duties as a human relations counselor for the school system. She and her attorney, Miss Pauline Rothmeyer, say she was attempting to accompany black students to pólice headquarters after the students had been arrested. Assistant Prosecutor Thomas F. Shea denied Mrs. Gulley's charges and asked Judge DeMascio to remand the case to Ann Arbor District Court. The judge said I he would make a ruling on the case on I or before Pee. 31.
