The Ann Arbor High School faculty, after meeting 10 hours yesterday, made 15 proposals in response to the 21 demands made by Negro students Monday. The faculty acted on a set of demands recommended to it by the Ad Hoc committee appointed [by the faculty and the black students. The Ad Hoc Committee, composed of 17 black stutóents and 18 school representaItives, based its proposals on the lorieinal 21 demands. Seven of the original demands were not acted upon by the Ad Hoc committee "due to lack of time," the faculty report said. "These are being referred by the faculty to the newly created Bi-Racial Citizens Advisory Committee for consideration." Seven of the Ad Hoc Committee's proposals were adopted by the teachers without change. The Ad Hoc committee's prop o s a 1 s and the faculty' s response are as follows : AD HOC COMMITTEE: Increase compensatory academie psychological and social services, for all students from low income families. FACULTY RESPONSE: In crease compensatory academie, jsychological and social servces for all educationally disadvantaged students. AD HOC C0MM1TTEE: Better quality of education for Negro students. The improvements will apply to all educationally disadvantaged students. FACULTY RESPONSE: Adopted as written. AD HOC COMMITTEE: Use the school newspaper to report progress in race relations and related problems. FACULTY RESPONSE: Adopted as written. AD HOC COMMITTEE: The human relations director for the Ann Arbor school system should be a Negro person, preferably a man who has demonstrated the ability to successfully deal with race relations problems. AD HOC COMMITTEE: In addition to honors for the college and university preparatory curriculum for outstanding students, awards should also be given to those in other curriculums, such as industrial arts, stenographic, etc. We further recommend that all d e p a r tments take action to implement this as soon as possible. FACULTY RESPONSE: Adopted as written. AD HOC COMMITTEE: Vocationally oriented students shall be provided with ' a high quality education to provide entry skills in skilied trades, such as electricity and plumbing; in technical áreas such as electronics, drafting and mechanics; and in other types of jobs which have future demands. FACULTY RESPONSE: Adopted as written. AD HOC COMMITTEE: Establishment of intensive human relations in-service training programs for teachers and administrators. Include black civil rights leaders in the training. We further recommend that contacts be made with community civil rights leaders immediately and that action be taken to initiate a program in September, 1968. FACULTY RESPONSE: Adopted as written. AD HOC COMMITTEE: To examine and modify discipline policies and practices in the school and prohibit differential and excessive punishment or suspension of Negroes. FACULTY RESPONSE: To re-examine and modify where necessary, discipline policies and practices in the school and reaffirm our prohibition of differential treatment of any student. AD HOC COMMITTEE: Well defined grievance procedures to handle students problems. FACULTY RESPONSE: Well defined grievance procedures to handle student problems shall be established. AD HOC COMMITTEE: Elimínate the practice of marking down students' grades because of unexcused absences.
