TheTnn ArSor Board of Edu-I ation voted last night to dis-l ontinue all general f ees forl unior high school students and o introduce a $5 AU-Sports icket on an optional basis for senior high studnrts. This action means that all general fees and book rental ees have been discontinued Erom all levéis of the Ann Arbor Public Schools. Last year, a $4 general fee vas charged to junior high stuJents, a $7 fee to senior high students. In May, the general Eees charged by the school district were declared illegal by Circuit Court Judge Wflliam F. Ager Jr. A suit had been filed n court in February by two Ann Arbor citizens charging ;hat such fees were illegal. Supt. W. Scott Westerman Jr. said the board's legal counsel eonsiders the sports ticket m accord with Judge Ager's ruling The ticket is completely optional. Students who do not buy it must buy separate tickets to each sports event, Westerman said. The superintendent said itl had been originally planned to charge a $2 textbook rental fee to junior high students, but this idea had been dropped as "inappropriate" s i n c e b ook rental f ees are not charged to elementary or high schoolj students. Westerman said anticipated: income f rom higher building; rental f ees would cover the dis-; continuance of junior high f ees., The Board óf Education had intended to phase out all generlal fees from the public schools fey the 1969-70 school year, but tudge Agers ruling for them to tliminate the fees a year early.
