The two-year contract agreement reached Thursday by the Board of Education and the knn Arbor Education Association represents a total increase of $600,000 to $700,000 in operating expenditures for the 1968-69 fiscal year, according to School Board President Joseph R. Julin. "This is far from the amountl sought by the teachers," Julinl said today, "but when coupled! with the improvement agreed tol for the fiscal year 1969-70, doesl represent a substantial improvement in salary schedule which is well deserved. "The initial demand of thel teachers' bargaining team ifl accepted by the board wouldl have carried a price tag sub-l stantially in excess of $2 mil-l lion. As the mediation processl began the AAEA demand was! even then in the million dollar I irange," Julin said. . He objected to yesterday si News headline, "Teachers Pay Hikes Close To Their Goal," calling it "simply an inadequate and totally erroneous summary of the agreement reached after months of negotiations. "The long continued bargainj ing this year reflects a good faith desire on the part of all concerned to bargain until agreement results," he concluded. "It does not evidence capitulation by either side." I Julin drd not comment on the cost of settlement of the 1969-70 budget. i
