The Ann "rbor Board of Edul catión turned down "with re-J luctance" a request from a lo-l cal mother that kindergarten attendance boundaries be altered. Supt. W. Scott Westerman Jr.l recommended the request be denied, despite the number of mothers - usually working mothers- who regularly present him with "excellent and persuasive" arguments. Usually the mothers ask that the kinderigarten child be allowed to attend school in an attendance area different from the prescribed one, because the baby-j sitter or nursery school is lo-l cated in this area. j Westerman said the childrenl should be compelled to attendl kindergarten within their ownl attendance boundaries for thel sake of "continuity," among lother things. He also commentted it would be a "most difficult" administrative task to decide each and every request on its merits, instead of according to a general policy. Several trustees were sympathetic to the mother's request, and a one-hour discussion was held on the matter. Trustees Richard M. Wood, Paul H. Johnson and Ted Heusel voted to change the attendance requirements, as the mother had reauested. Other trustees, such as Wil-I liam C. Godfrey, opposed anyl changes, s a y i n g "attendancel boundaries would then no long-I er mean much at all." - '
