Elementary and junior high school pupils in the Ann Arbor Public Schools must attend an extra hour of classes Friday, June 13, in order to fulfill the 180 days of minimum pupil attendance required by the State Department of Education, it has been announced. Previously the final day of classes was to have been June 12. Since the state requires that only "60 per cent" of the school district's pupils attend the full 180 days, students at Huron and Pioneer Highs will not need to make up the extra day. Exams will have been completed at the high schools and seniors will have been graduated the night before. School Supt. W. Scott Westerman Jr. said the need for the extra class time is the result of erroneous information received from the Department of Education when the schools were closed Monday, March 31, to mourn President Eisenhower's death. If the day is not made up, a stiff financial penalty would be assessed against the school district. The deficit can be overeóme if 60 per cent of the pupils are present for a brief period June 13. Elementary and junior-high pupils will be released approximately one hour earlier than planned on Thursday, June 12. Grades I through 9 (not kindergarten, pre-school), high-school or special education classes) will report to school Friday, June 13, at the first hour of the day.
