Some 30 high-school seniors from the Ann Arbor area have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, it was announced today. The list includes 10 students from Pioneer High Schoo', 11 pupils from Huron High, and one student from St. Thomas High School. Last year, a total of 24 pupils from Pioneer and Huron highs were semifinalists. St. Thomas had no semifinalists last f all. The students are among 15,000 semifinalists in the nation, constituting less than one per cent of the graduating seniors in the United States. E a c h semifinalist must 'advance to finalist standing to be considered for a Merit Scholarship. They become finalists by receiving the endorsement oí their schools, taking a second exa.mination, and submitting information about their achievements and interests. High - school grades, accomplishments, leadership ties, extracurricular activities and school citizenship of the finalists are evaluated. The winners of the Merit Scholarships, who may receive up to )-,500 a year for four college years, will be announced April 30, 1970. A total of 3,000 Merit Scholarships will b e awarded next spring. Adams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Adams, 2511 Londonderry; Joseph J. Keeley son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Keeley, 2655 Appleway; Peter J. Kostishak, son of Mr. and M s. George K. Kostishak, 2731 Colony; Linda M. Laird, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Lai d, 2445 Adare; David A. Loomis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Loomis, 2667 Powell; Deniz Tek, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. R. Tek, 60 Underdown; Jane C. Weeks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Weeks, 2120 Needham; David M. Yih, son cf Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Yih, 3530 Huron River Dr., and Ann C. Stern, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stern, 2640 Towner Blvd. The semifinalists from Pioneer High School are: Edward H. Adelson, son of the J. Adelsons, 1417 Culver Rd.; Lisa D. Barense, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Barense, 2023 Greenview Dr.; Lucille 3. Binder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Binder, 4001 Pratt Rd.; Ellen B. Bi Iiop, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Ronald C. Bishop, 1011 Lincoln; Jonathan A. Cohén, son o" M.s. Ruthmary W. Cohen, 1339 Arella; Susan L. Coon, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Minor J. Coon, 1901 Austin; William D. Doneth, sc.i of the William Doneths, 1522 Covington Dr.; James R. Leveniek, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Leveniek, 800 Loyola; Judith A. Lohla, daughter of the J. A. Lohlas, 2102 Pauline, and William J. Ullman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ullman, 1430 Granger. Michael L. Moon, son of Mr.l and Mrs. Mervin Moon of 4151 Arbana, is the semifinalist froml St. Thomas High School. The semifinalists from Ann Arbor's outlying areas are James A. Fishback, Mary E. Healy, Michael D. Jabara, Donat R. Leclair, Karen B. McAninch and Douglas R. Worsnop- all from Plymouth High School; Barbara J. Weber from Saline High School, and R. Alian Hewens from Lincoln Consolidated High School in Willis.
