School Supt. W. Scott Westerman Jr. has recommended to the Board of Education that an additional class principal and class counselor be hired for Huron High School. Westerman said he "expected" the counselor would be black and the class principal would be a man. If a black counselor cannot be found, the superintendent said the counselor would be "black inside," that is, would be able to relate well to both black and white students. Huron High School does not now have a black counselor. A black teacher, Ernest Gillum, willbe appointed as an ombudsman for the black dents second semester on a halftime basis, however. One of the demands of the Huron High Black Student Union last month was for an additional black counselor. This demand also was recommended Wednesday by the Huron Bi-Racial Advisory Board and a student-faculty Ad Hoc Committee. Both had been asked by the board to review the black demands. Speaking about a new class principal, Westerman said it would have to be an "extraordinary applicant" if the person hired for the position is not a man because of the nature of the job. Presently, Huron has only one class principal, while eer High has three. Pioneer] also has six counselors, white I Hurón has five. Hurón now hasj 1,537 pupils. Pioneer has 2,310. The ratio of counselor to stu-j dents at Huron is currently 1 to 300. The superintendent said hel was making the recommendations to "relieve the principal of an unreasonable workload aggravated by the opening and administering of a new and partiálly unfinished physical facility." The board informally agreed to Westerman's recommendations. He said he would begin recruiting applicants immediately, though he cautioned that it is diffieult to find new staff members at mid-year.
