Anrf Aíbor School Distric ■ officials have issued a state ■ ment in connection with a dis Iturbance earlier this week at I Hurón High School. The statement follows: I "A story in The Amn Arbor iNews on Tuesday reported that la 16-year-old white Huron High Istudent was attacked arid beaten by more than a dozen rNegroes in the school cafetería, and that the boys who were with him fled when he was attacked. ' ' A f t e r conducting conferences with students involved in the incident, with the assistance of ombudsman Ërnest C. Gillum, Principal Paul K. Meyers released this information to clarify what happened in the cafetería. "The incident occurred a bout I 12:45 p.m. Monday in the cafetería, involving an equal number of both black and white students, and wa& triggered I when a white student pressed al jlack student about a series of I black-white clashes that oc-l ■ curred in the coramunity during Ithe school spring recess. These I clashes between black and white I students t o o k place during Wednesday through Friday of [ last week and involved the pólice on several occasions. As the white student was árguing with the black student, there was a heated exchange of words, including derogatory language used against a black, student, as well as a daré to fight directedj against the black student. Thenj a black student struck a white I student on the side of the head.l At thát moment a small and! equal number of black andl [white students - of the 400 stu-l dents in the cafetería at thatj] time - who had joined the I group, began pushing andl throwing chairs until the melee I was broken up by several I teachers and custodians who I were nearby. The entire incident lasted less than two minutes and caused a cut on I the hand of one white student. I Principal Meyere stated that I the matter is still under 1 gation and any disciplinary I action will await this review."
