Committee Recommends Modernizing Of Slauson
A long, comprehensive report recommending that Slauson Junior High School be modernized so that it equals the standard for new junior high schools in the system was presented this week to the Ann Arbor Board of Education. The report was the result of more than two months' work of a 19-man citizens' committee charged in January w i t h assessing the present Slauson facilities and defining the future educational needs of the students. The committee recommended that any addition to the school should not decrease the amount of outdoor recreation space, saying the 12-acre Slauson site is considered "minimal." The committee therefore r e c o mmended that an additional site be purchased for the Slauson addition. The committee also recommended that certain "middle school" concepts be incorporated into junior high schools, such as personalization of a large school through a "schoolwithin-a-school concept," small group instruction, large group instruction, independent study, flexible scheduüng and the community school concept. Specific recommendations for renovating each area of the! school were detailed. Additional recommendations included: - Additional parking space. - Improved outside lighting. - A student popuia tion for the building based on 1,050 students in grades 7-9. - A teachers' lounge. - Small conference rooms built into many classrooms. - Closed circuit televisión and a televisión production room. An administrative recommendation on the report is expected next week.
