The preliminary budgets" for both special education and general education were reviewed last night by the Washtenaw Intermediate Board of Education. Supt. Nick A. Ianni told the board the district plans to do slightly better than the preliminary special education budget of $1,666,164.40 states. He said that the expenditures will be lower than projected and an increase in state aid is also expected. The total figure reflects assets available for current operating expenses. Special education funds are received from local and state sources and set aside for specific areas of activity. In discussing the general education budget, Ianni said, "This reflects a very sad situation with our expenditures over revenue around $87,000 unless we can improve our fund equity." A preliminary total o f $629,188.00 was reported for the general education fund which includes administrative services, instructional programs and coopera tive programs between school districts. Final adoption of the budgets is set for the board's next meeting Aug. 25. Millage rates for the 1970-71 1 year were approved by the i board. The recommendations j maintained the same millage! rate for 1969-70. It was moved by board vicepresident Charles Good t o accept the general education fund tax levy of .12 mili spread on a school equalized valuationj of $1,134,840,618; a special education fund" tax levy of 1 mili; and to certify a debt retirement fund tax levy of .18 mili. This was a total tax rate of 1.30 milis. In other action, the board elected officers for the new year; Richard Nisbet, president; Charles Good, vice president; Nick Ianni, secretary; and Mrs. Elizabeth Savage, treasurer. New employé contracts were approved for three special education teachers and one general education teacher and the board also approved the application to the Municipal Finance Commission for a new computer hardware project. A resolution was made by Charles Good to be forwardai to the Michigan Association of School Boards that representatives to the association should not be required to be presently serving on their local boards. If the person had served within thelasttwoyearsGood requested that the person should still be eligible.
