Pioneer, Huron Present Diplomas Awards To 1,159
A lóiüi oí i,im &Kn Arbor Pioneer and Hurón High School students were graduated Thursday night in separate commencement exercises at the University's Crisler Arena. The ceremonies were for 450 Huron High and 709 Pioneer High seniors and their families. School Supt. R. Bruce McPherson, in his first Ann Arbor commencement, presented the graduating seniors with their diplomas. Michelle Mueller, who was a member of the class executive board, was the female recipiënt of the 1972 Huron Award. Michelle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Neil Mueller of 2020 Camelot, worked on the school newspaper and the yearbook. She has participated in the Theatre Guild and Student Council and received state recognition for her work in debate and forensics. Michelle will enter Eastern Michigan University this fall. The male recipiënt of the 1972 Huron Award was E. Javier Ergueta. Ergueta, who won a Howard National Scholarship and will be attending Harvard University in September, was president of the Huron Student Council during his senior year. He also served on the Bi-Racial and Discipline Policy Review Committees and was chairman of the Civil Rights Committee. He is the son of Mrs. Elsa Barragan of 3039 Wolverine. Sarah Perkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Perkins of 2815 Overridge, was presented with Huron's Michigan Alumnae Award. Sarah participated in several clubs during her high school career - Latín, ENACT, Germán, Ski and the Girls' Athletic Association. She also was a member of the Symphony Band and the Class 'Executive Board. Sarah was a varsity member of the girls' field hockey, volleyball, basketball and softjall teams. She will enter Principa Colege in Elsah, 111., in September. The winner of the Michigan Alumni Aard at Hurón High Ms Anthony Patriek, a member of the Class Executive Board during all three years of high school as well as an officer during his sophomore and junior years. Patrick also was president of the A Cappella Choir and was a Student Council representative. The son of Mr. and Mrs. David Patrick of 1520 Traver Rd., he will enroll in the Industrial Management Program of the General Motors Institute immediately after graduation. The recipients of Huron High's Martin Luther King Awards were Durinda Minor and James Bryant. Durinda, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Minor of 3203 Baylis Drive, has been a cheerleader, member of the Bi-Racial Committee and the Black Student Union. She was secretary of the Hostess Committee, served on the Student Council and participated in forensics. Durinda will enter Western Michigan University this autumn. Bryant, the other Martin Luther King Award winner, has participated in varsity football, basketball and track. A ' member of the Black Student Union, he also served on the Senior Prom Coordinating Committee. The son of Mrs. Emma Simpson of 351 Beakes, Bryant will enter Western Michigan University this September. Seven Pioneer High students received scholarship and citizenship awards. Susan Green, a member of Student Government and the Class Executive Board during her three years of high school, was the winner of the Mary Ellen Lewis Humanitarian Award. That award is given to the "senior girl considered outstanding in her altruistic attitude toward her classmates, character and service above self." Susan, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Abraham Green, plans to attend the University of Michigan in preparation for a career in environmental law. During her high school career, Susan was a member of: Debate and Forensics, Theatre Guild, Mixed Ensemble, ENACT, Conservation Club, A Cappella Choir, Girls Track Team, Omega Staff, Russian Club, Chairwoman of Elections and By-Laws Committee, F.A.S.T. Committee, Bi-Racial Committee, Principal Screening Committee, and the Student Involvement and Policy and Program Changes Committee. Lisa Mets, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mets, was presented with the Alice Porter Medal, given to the "outstanding girl citizen of the graduating class." Lisa served as sophomore class secretary and as student government secretary during her junior year. She also was a Student Government member during her sophomore and senior years and served on the junior and senior class Executive Boards. A member of the Symphony Band and Symphony Orchestra for the past three V e a r s, List receiyed the Citizenship Award of the Daughters of the American Revolution during her senior year. She attended Girls' State during her junior year, was a member of a Committee to Establish a Reading Lab, and was chairwoman of the Teacher Evaluation mittee. The University of Michigan Re'gents Alumni Scholarship Winner will attend the University of Michigan. The recipients of Pioneer's Martin Luther King Awards were Michael Wallace and Sherman Whitman. Wallace was a member of the school's Grievance Committee and of the football, wrestling and track teams. He participated in the Ann Arbor Junior Light Opera, the Theatre Guild of Pioneer High and the A Cappella Choir. Wallace, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wallace, will enroll this fall at Eastern Michigan University. Whitman, the son of Charles E. Whitman, was vice president of the Pioneer Black Student Union and president of the Pioneer Student Government. He also was a member of the Kadio-TV Guild. His future plans are not determined at this time. The recipiënt of Pioneer's Horatio Chute citizenship medal was Mark Nicolaides. The son of Dr. and Mrs. Ernest Nicolaides, Mark served as senior class president. He also was a member of the Princpal Screening Committee and the Committee to Review the Discipline Policy. He served as chairman of the Homeroom Presidents' Council. Nicolaides was vice president of Pilgrim Fellowship, an Eagle Scout, a God and Country Award recipiënt, a Vigil Honor Member, a Leadership Trainer in the Boy Scouts and Lodge Chief in the Order of the Arrow. He will attend Cornell University in the fall. Barbara Holland was presented with the Michigan Alumnae Honor Trophy Certificate. A National Merit Scholar and the recipiënt of a $1,000 scholarship, Barbara was senior class secretary, Student Government representative and a member of the Class Executive Board. She was a member of the Symphony Band, the Hostess Club, the Youth for Understanding Wind Ensemble, the Open Registration Committee and Teacher Evaluation Committee, the Ann Arbor Figure Skating Club and the Hockettes. The daughter of Mrs. George Morley and John Holland, Barbara will enroll at Cornell University in September. The other recipiënt of the Michigan Alumni Honor Trophy Certificate was Steve Thiry, ttíe son of Mr. and Mrs. James Thiry. Thiry won two letters as cross country tri-captain and three 1 ters in track. He also participated in junior varsity basketball. Thiry was a member of the Teacher Evaluation Committee and the Senior Prom Committee. A finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, he won an honorary scholarship in the Michigan Competitive Scholarship Testl and is a U-M Regents Alumni Scholar. Thiry also was a student tutor and al participant in Student Government activities. He will attend the University of Michigan this autumn.
