A $ 8 Sií , 8 O 3 'construction budget for the new library addition was approved by the Ann Arbor Board of Education last night. The budget estímate prepared by Construction Manager Jeffress-Dyer Inc. includes 20,000 additional square feet to be added to the east side of the present library plus unfinished basement storage space and remodeling of the existing stairway. The electorate approved the $989,000 bond for the library addition as part of a $12,847,000 bonding proposal in June 1971. Pioneer II High School" is one Volkswagen sedan richer i today. The Board of Educaüon last night adcepted the car, as a gift from Meredith E. Lind, to be userin the school's mechanics class. o o A contingency fund of $20,000 for the Balas Administrative Services Building was established by the Board of Education last night. The authorized funds to be available for the building now total $795,000. t In April the board approved $775,000 for the new Administrative Services Building, 2555 S. State. The final sales agreement for the building totaled $771,575, leaving $3,425 as a contingency. Robert Mattox, vice president of Advanced Planning Research Associates (APRG) reported there are changes required by city code and the state fire marshal which ceed the $3,425 contingency. Changes so far amounting to $5,700 include smoke release vents for the roof of the warehouse part of the building, partitioning changes, more exit signs and three-foot thick doors where some thinner doors are now being used. The project budget is still $328,000 less than was available. Mattox reported $913,000 was originally bonded for an administrative services buildi n g. The Board of Eudcation received $210,000 in insurance for the o 1 d administration I building, 1220 Wells, which burned in November. Mattox s a i d the project surplus will be put in a pool with other surpluses and used for other programs to be determined by the board at a later date. o o September has been proclaimed "Advance The Physically Handicapped Month" by Mayor Robert J. Harris. The Board of Education last night resolved to rededicate the public schools "to the assurance that the necessary programs, faciliües and personnel are available for the education of the physically handicapped." o o A plan to pay architdcts a percentage of the bonding issue for a project rather than a percentage of the final cost of a building was discussed by the Board of Education last night. Robert Mattox, vice president of Advanced Planning Research Group (APRG) told board members, under the present system, architects are put in the awkward position of receiving increasing lower fees for increasing amounts of work to save money through design revisions.
