Bonding Revision Offered
Another revisión on a bonding issue which will probably face Ann Arbor School District voters Dec. 18 has been offered by School Supt. W. Scott Westerman Jr. -The latest revisión calis for a $9,596,000 bonding issue- $166,000 more than a Sept 18 estimate. None of the revisions has been substantial, and all estimates have placed the bonding issue in the $9 million range. Westerman said the bonding election should be set Oct. 30 for a Dec. 18 election. He said pre-qualification of the bonds- a legal formality which says the state will back the bonds- will take place during the next two weeks. The probable bonding issue will be in three parts, each of which can be accepted or rejected separately. The n e w e s t revisions are caused by an additional site purchased for a 12-room elementary school, increased costs in square foot estimates for an addition ' tö the main public library, and the decisión to com-j plete Carpenter and Mitchell Schools. Westerman said the latter decisión was made because of the unexpected high elementary-school enrollment this year (11,284 had been expected; about 11,400 enrolled). If the Dec. 18 date is set by the school board, the ballot will be shared with a one-mill proposal to finance a proposed county-wide vocational education facility for secondary students. This millagé levy was set by the Washtenaw County Intermedíate School District. The three lalest bonding : posals are as follows: Proposal I - School Sites, Buildings, Additions and Renovations. This item would total $7,495,000 and would include the : fifth junior high for $4,989,000; a 12-room elementary school and I site plus additions to existing schools for a total of $1,870,000, and renovations at Slauson andl Tappan Junior Highs, M a c kj School and other miscellaneousl renovations for $636,000. Proposal II - Service and] Administration Facilities. This] proposal would include a building and gfounds facility forj $436,000 and an administration J building for $889,000, for a total of $1,325,000. i Proposal III - Library Addition. This item would total! $776,000, and would be an addition at the main library. This estímate increased from $620,000, the result of per square foot estimates increasing from $26 to $34. If the nearly $9.6 million issue is approved it would mean a tax increase of about 1 mili. This means a tax hike of about $1 per $1,000 of state equalized valuation.
