Special Education Candidates' Topic
The nine cafldidates in the June 9 Ann Arbor Board of Education election will make their first public appearance as a group at a public Candidates Night at the Ann Arbor Public Library at 8 p.m. today. The meeting is sponsored by five parent-professional groups concerned with special education and special services. The focus of the evening will be "whether it should be mandatory for school boards to edúcate all children rather than to continue the current permissive policy of choosing which children they will edúcate,'' according to Mrs. J u d i t h Greenbaum, an organizer of the meeting. Among questions the candidates will be asked to answer are: Should the Ann Arbor School System assume responsibility for education of all preschool children presenting educational risks? Are current procedures for handling "disruptive" children a reasonable educational policy? Are there enough classrooms for the emotionally disturbed? Are there enough helping teachers, reading coördinators, and teachers trained in overcoming learning disabilities?
