Mrs. Patricia "T. Shipman of 6 Shipman Circle is one of two women bidding for a seat on the Ann Arbor Board of Education in the June election. A 14-year resident of the city, Mrs. Shipman is the wife of Dr. David E. Shipman, a doctor of veterinary medicine locally. She is a gradúate of Michigan State University and has three children in the public school system here. She issued the following statement concerning her candidacy to the board: "Because I have been a teacher and have children at the elementary, junior high and high school levéis of our school system, I believe I can bring to the board a dimensión that is not now represented. "I become a candidate because of my increasing concern for the individual; his right to an education; his lack of opportunity to develop to his fullest in our present school structure. Education is one of our basic rights. It also carries with it a responsibility to seek to learn and to do one's best. "Because c 1 a s srooms are b e i n g disrupted by children and y o u n g adults who are rude and unwilling to learn, our schools are failing to 'provide the opportunity for education for all. It is alarming that teachers in this system are considering leaving because these disruptions keep them from properly teaching. Parents are considering private schools because the disturbances cost their children the opportunity to be taught properly. "It is time the community stands behind our teachers and administrators and we demand that standards of behavior be maintained so our teachers will be free to teach students the needed basic skills and to guide and help them to achieve their individuality of self-expression. "Children and young adults are capable of learning and behaving and not to expect this of them is to rob them of the opportunity to prove to themselves their capabilities. Self-discipline, respect for one's self, and respect for others is an important aspect of the educational process and must be reaffirmed and encouraged. "The curriculum of our school system should be evaluated so that the individual gets as much as possible from his school experience. For those young adults who will begin working after graduation, the preparation and guidance they receive is particularly important as it prepares them for functioning as a contributing adult in our complex world. "I should like to see a strong program on drug I abuse- drugs, alcohol, and tobáceo introducedinto the curriculum- M
