A bonding request totaling $12,776 000 for the school district was proposed to the Ann Arbor Board of Education last night during its briefing session. The bonding proposal was made by the Election Proposal Committee, representing 15 community and school organi2aHntoe board decides to accept the proposal at its regular meeting next week this request will be placed on the 3USS School Supt. W. ScottWeste erman Jr. voiced his support for the reS as submitted, the board members did not voice any strong opinions on the proposal last night. . In his report, Charles Votaw, chairman of the committee, said, "The items which we propose to be a part of a bonding request are those that we beheve need immediate attention. We beheve that the voters of the school system should have the opportunity to express their opinión on what we perceive to be the highest priority building needs at this time, recognizing the fact that many of the requests of the PTO (ParentTeacher Organization) groups are valia and must be considered in the near fUThe ' committee received reports from 16 elementary schools and four junior high PTO groups. They also considered reports supplied by administrators. The report said predictions of student population growth over the next several years would be "between one and two per cent, which can present a significant number of students. The addition of students from parochial schools mto the public schools is another possibüity that I cannot be accurately assessed at this i time." _ ■■M- Estimated c o s t s of new schools I include allowances for site acquisitions. ;: The recommendations were the I ing of two new elementary schools in the I southeast and northeast of Ann Arbor- I $3,828,000; the building of a new Mack I School to include a preschool wing- I $2,242,000; the addition of a new I room wing and renovation at Slauson- I $2,060,000; the building of central 1 ties and five new classrooms at Dixboro I School- $1,039,000; and renovation at I Stone Elementary School, $373,000. The addition of four classrooms andl multipurpose room at Carpenter - I $447,000; remodeling of the art andl music room at Mitchell- $200,000; the I addition of two classrooms plus two I auxiliary rooms at Pittsfield school - $125,000; remodeling of the materials center, science rooms and offices at Tappan- $200,000; addition to the main ' Ann Arbor Public Library- $989,000; and creation of a service building- $913,000. A fund for future site acquisition- $195,000, and four projects for Forsythe renovation - $135,000, were also included in the bonding proposal. Money for the addition to the central library and Dixboro School addition have already been approved by voters in the bonding election of 1965. But, according to the committee in its report, "We also recognize the importance of the decisión of the board to transfer funds from these projects in order to complete other building programs in the school systera. "The Election Proposal committee strongly urges the school board to commit itself to using the money for all the specified projects, should the bonding I request be approved," said the com' mittee chairman. I Board action will be taken at the next i regular meeting. There was some discussion over a part of the report which stated the committee I at this time did not recommend that a "community center" portion of Mack School be funded through a school bonding issue. "We are in favor of the community center concept," the report said, but , perhaps this should be a part of all schools or a joint program of the city I and school district." j
