Ralph D. Bomouse, former owner of Ralph's Market, has formally announced his candidacy for the Ann Arbor Board of Education in the June 14 election. He said in a statement: "In these times of confusión and strife we as Americans must continue to build our country's future with the single most important and effective tooi at our command- our g r e a t educational system. "The one thing that will overeóme the forces that would disrupt and lower the standards by which we live is a meaningful and lasting education for all children. We as a community must unite in order to provide this education. We can accomplish this if at this moment we will realize- and then admit- that we have a serious problem with education in Ann Arbor. Each of us then must decide that in order to achieve the greatest good, many sacrifices will have to be made by everyone involved. We must act according to fundamental principies, being true to ourselves and our fellows in public and in private. We must learn to consider all men our brothers, to love one another, and to act together to solve all problems. "In order to achieve our purpose I believe that guidelines for greater control must be established, explicitly conveyed to the students, the faculty, and the administration- agreed upon by all, and then strictly, firmly, and consistently enforced. "Definite two-way lines of communication must be opened between parents and administrators, parents and teachers, students and administration, so that the co-operation we need to bring about the action we want is possible. __" Counseling services, long a valuable tooi of the administration must be continuously upgraded to become an even more valuable service to the student. Counselors must constantly be educated and evaluated in order that their skills may attain the highest possible quality. "The inefficiències in our system must be found and eliminated so that the money available to the schools can be used to benefit the maximum number of students. With this direction in mind I will support the millage proposal. "The Board of Education must support the superintendent in the knowledge that he has the ability and the desire to achieve with us that which none of us can accomplish alone; that his desires are coincïdental with ours- to give the children of this community an education that will unquestionably provide them with the skills they need to make their way in this scoeity to a life that will be full of the things they decide are 1 tant to them. "We must speak out against the use of I drugs of any kind so that our children I will be able mentally and physically to I use the education we will provide. And I then, given the more satisfying 1 ence of self accomplishment through a I better education and greater 1 ty, and the fact of a greater realization I of goals, this problem will be eliminated I in our society. "The education of our children must be updated to better prepare them for the diverse experiences they will be subject tó in our high schools, colleges, and ' in life after school. Input from the administration, faculty, parents, and the students themselves must be coordinated and used in the curriculum planning operation. Those who do not wish to continue in the academie curriculum must not be forced to stay because it is the thing to do or because there is no place else to go. A vocational experience must be provided for them só that each may become the valuable member of society that is every man's right." Bolhouse, of 1515 Barnard Rd., operated Ralph's Market at 709 Packard from 1956 to August, 1970. The store, temporarily closed, has been reopened under new ownership. An investor, Bolhouse now is in the process of new-business formation. The 45-year-old candidate has lived in Ann Arbor since 1946. He and Mrs. Bolhouse have had seven children enrolledin Ann Arbor schools. One child now is enrolled at the University of Michigan, and one will enter Eastern Michigan University in the f all.
