WILLOW RU - A proposal for an additional eight milis for the Willow Run School District was defeated for a fourth time Monday. According to school officials, the millage defeat means teacher lay-offs, curriculum cuts and half-day sesions for students. The millage request, which would have alleviated a $500, 000 projected deficit in the school budget, was rejected in a 947 to 912 vote. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Elkins Bruce interpreted the vote as a "protest." "People want property tax reform, and they see this as a way to get it," he said. Although school officials will be cutting programs during meetings later t o d a y , Bruce said it is "almost certain 50 teachers will be dismissed, and we'U petition the state board of education to go on a four-hour school day next year." O t h e r expected cuts include: closing two elementary schools ; elimination of all art, i music and physical education i classes and programs; varsity lathletics will not be 1 ed; transportatiotr will be cut, and all paid crossing guards will be eliminated; Five high school and one junior high counselors will be cut, leaving only one Title Ipaid counselor in the high school; four custodial and two maintenance men will be eliminated; field trips will be eliminated; junior high home economics and industrial arts classes will be dropped, and ninth grades will stay in the junior highs.
