Diana Autinrwho will befé senior at the University of Michigan in September, has announced her candidacy for the Ann Árbor Board of Education. The election will be held June 11. In announcing her candidacy, Autin said: "Education is political, just as school boards and school board elections are political. I am running for school board as a Human Rights Party candidate, in order to implement the Human Rights Party platform in regard to student rights, community control of schools and the ending of racism, sexism, tracking and financial reform. "The Human Rights Party recognizes young people as human beings with full constitutional f r e e d o m and the capacity and right to determine their own Mures. though all people must have the right and opportunity to an education at any time in their lives, compulsory attendance must be abolished. "As long as students are forced to attend school, schools do not have to meet students' needs or allow them to have any power in decision-making. "Each school should be run by a democratically elected 'community school board' composed of students, staff and their community members, each segment elected by and answerable to their respective constituencies. Community school boards would be responsible for implementing the goals of their communities and ensuring that the rights of all were respected. "Control over the classroom itself, however, must be in the hands of the students, for they are the ones most directly affected by it. The rights of school employés, including the right to form or join politie al organizátions and unions and the right to strike, should be respected. "HRP calis for the elimination of racism in the school system. The violence and trashing directed against the schools are proof that schools are not meeting the needs of students, especially minority students. People do not de-_ stroy what is valuable and important to them. "Minority communities must have the right to institute and to control classes dealing with their cultures and histories.
