Editor, The Nws: Monday the Ann Arbor School Administration should be given a resounding NO to their request for a 11.66 mili propertytax. Some cali this "just a renewal" or that it does not increase the tax "rate." True, except these are half-truths. What will be the cost on the basis of increasing assessments? To most homeowners it will cost them $100-$200 this year and to many it will be even higher, $116.60 for each $10,000 of the new assessme.it for 1973 taxes. Now, compare the new assessment vrtth the 1968 assessment. Those who voted for this millage in 1968 voted for a moderate increase in taxes - BUT pDOKWHAT HAPPENED! Assessments I increased and the actual taxes are I much higher. We can expect I ments to continue to increase. Will the increase doublé in the next 5 years? With such increases 11.66 milis may mean up to $500 in taxes in the next five years. We must stop this method of fináncing schools that gives them a blank check regardless of one's ability to pay. To farmers in the area, the few that are left and who are essential if Ann Arbor expects to have any open space around it, this 11.66 milis means $500$1000 or more this year. School property taxes are driving the long-time residents out of Ann Arbor and forcing farmers and others in the country to sell their land, which is Ann ArI bor's open space, to the speculators. Finally, are we gettiag our money's worth? We pay teachers $15,000, average salary, for 9 inonths work and we pay 50 per cent more per pupil than many other chóöETAre Ann Arbor schools that ■ muchbetter? The school administrators, the I ers and their sympathizers deserve no I sympathy when they cry hardship if they I do not get this money. They know or this I most knowledgeable of all groups should I know that they have been living on I rowed time to expect to be supported by I the property tax and they have had I ty of time to correct the situation. Make the NO vote Monday definite so that the school administration will not waste all summer shedding crocodüe tears but will get down to work to do the job that should be done. Remember even if you have to pay taxi f are to get to the polls the saving just this year will pay for the trip many times over.
