Ann trbor School District voters ovérwhelmingly approved an 11.66 mili renewal and 1 mili levy for the library Monday. "There was no alternative," Board President Ted Heusel, said as district election workers reported the results last night. The 11.66 milis is about one-third of the district's operating budget. The renewal was approved by a 11,197 to 3,447 vóte. A separate levy of up to 1 mili for the library was approved by even a larger margin: 11,618 to 3,039. Both issues passed in each of the district's 70 precincts. Based on the total vote for the library millage issue, the ballot item which drew the most number of votes, election officials reported some 14,657 persons - or about 18 to 20 per cent of the registéred voters - cast votes yesterday. This compares with 18,875 voters last year when there were only school board candidates on the ballot. Actins Sunt. LeRov Cappaert said last nightïnspite of a lot of appropnate criticism, the results do show support for the schools. I'm particularly glad the library is going to have its own footing , for the next few years." Trustee Cecil Warner, chairman of the i Millage Proposals Committee, said the, two millage issues were approved "prob-i ably by the widest margin ever." "We have to be very careful not to de-i ceive ourselves. . .all this really meansi is that we had 11.66 milis, a big part of! our operational budget, to be decided on.; Voters realized they couldn't turn itj down. This community is not an irresponsible community. If it had been 2 additional milis, it might have been dif-j ferent," Warner said. By approving the separate 1 mili levy for the library, voters showed farsightedness, Warner said. Currently in Lansing there is no legislation for schools that makes allowances for those school districts supporting public libranes, he added. , , . Gene Wüson, head of the library's erence department, said this morning I with voter approval of the 1 mili, the library will be able to restore most of the cuts that have been made over the last I two years, began to replace worn out records and start restoring the book collection. He added for the first time in 20 years the library will be open this summer on Saturdays if the board gives final approval. Library officials said prior to the election they would request .74 mili the first ] year of the levy and perhaps the full mili the second and third years. Because the 1 mili authorization for the library was approved, taxpayers will pay up to an extra $1 for every $1,000 of assessed valuation of property. The increase in taxes on a $20,000 house with an assessed valuation of $10,000 will be up to $10. Taxpayers will not pay a higher tax rate because the 11.66 milis was approved. The tax rate will remain at 32.55 milis the same as for the 1972-73 school year.
