yT7 ' J ■ Alexander IStevenson, an emergency medical technician at University Hospital, is a candidate for the Human Rights Party nomination for City Council in the Second Ward. He will run against Lisa North, David A. Sinclair and Frank Shochet in the Feb. 19 primary. I n announcing, Stevenson said: "I would like to represent you (Second Ward voters) in 1 matters pertaining to city government. I am 23 years oíd, a Capricorn, married and have one son. I am a student at Washtenaw Community College and I work at University Hospital. As many of the people of the Second Ward work for the University in skilled or semi-skilled capacities, I think we have some of the same desires and some of the same problems. ' ' The Second Ward is unique in Ann Arbor because of the large student and worker population who are oppressed by the same factors of high rent, non-existent free public transportation, and misrepresentation of our interests by self-serving downtown businessmen. These same people who would spend our money oh pet projects such as a new downtown I shopping center and an exI panded airport, advocate such I things as tax-breaks for Main I Street businesses. City CounI cil is responsible for replacing some of the more relevant I city services with such things I as parking structures. ! This same City Council is I the one that planned the numI ber of parking spaces availaI ble to the community that is I not sufficient for the number I of cars so that the city is I guaranteed an income from I the students and workers that I rent and must park their cars I on the street. This is a large I problem on campus that parkI ing structures don't relieve. I "If elected to the Council, I I will attempt to remove from the eco-system harmful elements, such as too much noise and fume pollution and replace non - production elements such as concrete with oxygen producing green things. The application of city funds to the real problems that we have in this city would be something entirely new. We can never restore our harmony with nature if we continue to rely upon the systems that have gotten us to this point in our evolution. We must develop into forms that are consistent with our own best interests. "We have a shortage of fossil fuel now that won't be relieved until we find another type of fuel. We could develop a transit system in Ann Arbor that would use a fuel that is abundant, non-polluting and cheap, such as, methane. I suggest that añy transit system that we use should provide door-to-door service and should not pollute the air. It's bad enough that we put poisonous gases into the environment, besides not replacing the oxygen that is consumed in combustión. The city should look for ways to re-cycle our enormous garbage collection. Aluminum is worth $200 a ton and we woula be wise to sell it to I those who can use it. 1 "The failure of City Council I to take a firm anti-war stand I is inexcusible, considering the I strong anti-war commitment I that has been made by the I community on many I sions. It is true that the I pie are not being properly resented and many on the j present Council are not seeking 're-election because they have lost their constituents. Second Ward voters can now I choose from a list of six I didates that offer themselves I as representatives of your best interests. If elected, I I will work for the I ment of a permanent city I funded day care center for I the convenience of the people I in the Second Ward. I will I so work for the creation of a I city-wide emergency I tation department and a I adjustment of priorities in I city government. I will I ue to work for the I instatement of Ann Arbor's I realistic pot laws after this I election, whether I am elected I or not. "I really don't believe I ics, as defined in the I ist or Communist systems, I and since we have I tives of both ideologies in this I election I feel that I must I press my thoughts on this I subject. [ "When Henry Kissinger I says: "War is the ultímate I tooi of politics," he is saying I the same thing as Chairman I Ma o who says: "Political I power grows out of the barrel I of a gun." If this is really I itics, I don't want any part of it. However, I do believe in I elections and I think that politics are fine if they don't involve fear, oppression and death. "I would like to thank the Ann Arbor News for giving us this opportunity to communicate with the voters, and I would like to thank the people of Ann Arbor for being such good neighbors. Thank You."
