uhaklüJVOIX - The right wing John Birch Society is going all out to win the 106th District seat in the state House of Representatives. As a result, the local Republican party is bitterly split, with a large moderate faction supporting a write-in candidate, and the Democrats may capture this traditionally Republican seat. The Republican difficulties began in the August primary _when 11 men contended for the nomination. Richard Friske, 45, an Antrim County cherry and apple grower, f7 O j against a total of more than 7,000 cast for the other 10 candidates. He would rui against Democrat Peter Johnson, 33, of Boyne City. Friske, a Germán immigrant who had served as an1 electrician in Adolph Hitler's air force, is an area coördinator for the John Bireh Society and was a campaigner for George Wallace in the 1968 presidential election. Pie is supported by contributions from fellow Birchers all over the nation. Many outraged Republicans say Friske is not a Republican. They persuaded Glenn Law Jr., 27, a St. Ignace in candidate. Law ran third in the primary and polled 61 per cent of the Republican votes in the Upper Península part of the district. Law is campaigning as the only true R e p,ü b 1 i c a n representa tive of, this largely Republican district. He is given a chance of winning if he can succeed in persauding 'voters that it is technically possible to write his name on ' the ballot next Tuesday. Friske promises to let the Bible and the Constitution be his only guides when he gets to Lansing. He says he will fight to rid Michigan's educational system of the socialism which he argües dominatesit He opposes reform of the" abortion laws. He wishes tcinshackle the pólice so that they can better fight crime and dope. He opposes giving the vote to 18 year olds because, he says, they don't páy taxes and are irresponsible. The 106th District comprises five full counties in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula and the northeast portion of the Upper Peninsula. lts population of 71,792 is concentrated in Emmet, t Charlevoix, Antrim and" Otsego Counties around the cities of Petoskey, Charlevoix, Gaylord and Mackinaw City.
