LewiírC. Ernst, Republican candidate íor mayor in the Feb. 15 primary election, is calling for a revamping of the parking system on Main St. to make shopping more convenient for citizens. "There simply must be a better way," Ernst said. As his recommended solution. Ernst is calling for diagonal parking in the Main St. business a r e a . This parking would be in the center of the street, with through traffic lanes next to the curbs. Ernst said the present Main St. system was devised because of the bequest of Mrs. Elizabeth Dean of $1.7 million to the city. Under his plan, Ernst said the area separating cars which would park diagonally east and west of the center line could be planted with trees but that the existing trees on the promenade would have to be removed for the through traffic lanes. Further, Ernst said ers of the downtown should not be subjected to fines for overtime parking unless similar fines are given to perimeter shopping areas. "The ever - present meter-maids scare away many shoppers . . and shoppers pay their salaries too," he said.
