Mayor Robert J. Harris says the president-elect of the American Medical Association has denied stating that the smoking of marijuana by pregnant women produces birth defects. Dr Wesley Hall, contacted by Harris office yesterday, said the newspapers misquoted him. The story concerning Dr. Hall's remarks appeared nationally March 5. Harris said Dr. Hall was "furious about the misquote and considered issuing a rebuttal but was worried it would be messed up also." The mayor said Dr Hall says he did not say, and cannot say, marijuana produces the effects cited in the national wire story. Harris said Dr. Hall was speaking of hard drugs and LSD when he said use, by pregnant women produces birth defects in one out of 10 births. In addition to birth defects, Dr. Hall said the use of hard drugs and LSD reduces the sex drive in men who use these substances.
