The Second Ward Council battle pits Democratic incumbent Robert G. Faber against Republican Don W. Robinson. Faber was elected to his first term of office two years ago when he defeated Mrs Ruth Hobbs. He ran unsuccessfully for council in 1959 and 1960. In the February primary he defeated David Bloom, 534 to 279. He also has served on the Planning Commission for seven years and on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Faber, 44, is a 1949 graduate of Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa. He came to Ann Arbor in 1954 from New Jersey and presently owns and operates Faber's Fabrics shops. He is married with three children and lives at 2455 Adare. In campaign statements he has thrown support behind the recently passed city ordinance lowering possession of marijuana from a felony to a misdemeanor. He also advocated comprehensive treatment for drug addicts, including counseling and rehabilitative efforts, and gave support to youth oriented facilities such as Ozone House and Drug Help "that can deal with the problems at more basic and effective levels." Faber has also supported the need for low and moderate income housing in Ann Arbor. He said low-income housing should include "housing in a truly scattered pattern rather than relocating ghettos or creating new ones elsewhere" Concerning the moderate income housing, he noted "there are many workers who service the community but cannot afford to live here. Provision should be made for them." He also has supported neighborhood parks for older neighborhoods being compressed by commercial zoning. Robinson is making his first attempt for council and ran unopposed in the primary. He is a University graduate and former backfield coach for the Michigan football team. He also once played halfback for the U-M. In the past he has served as Republican City vice-chairman and Second Ward chairman. He is married and lives at 1045 Chestnut Rd. In 1968, Robinson served as chairman of the Ann Arbor Area United Fund campaign, after being a division chairman for four years. He now serves on the board of directors of both the United Fund and the Ann Arbor Foundation. He is also a member of Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce. Robinson is president of Insurance Management Co. and obtained the charter life underwriter degree in 1962. In his 14-year life insurance career he has been a national sales leader and speaker and president of five local, state and national life insurance associations, including the Michigan State Life Underwriters and the Washtenaw County Life Underwriters. In his campaign Robinson has accused the present city leadership of "politicizing" issues rather than seeking solutions "I would hope personally to be other than a political animal in my approach to a council position, recognizing that people more and more are looking for leadership that can solve problems, people they can believe in, regardless of political affiliation." he said. Robinson has also been a strong advocate of allowing the professional administrators to do their job without undue political interference. "This is no time to divide and impose, no time to usurp the professional administrator domain, no time to spend and then tax he said. "Undue interference by elected and appointed officials in the domain of dedicated professional administrators is harmful to our government," he has said.
