f-c-7utL y-A fff' Comments generally ' snpporting the idea of making it easier for local third political parties to get on city election j ballots were received during a public hearing last night. The hearing was held by a special committee appointed by City Council to make recommendations concerning local elections. Attorney Fred Steingold, I chairman of the committee, said his group hopefully will have writtern recommendations for changing the city's election laws ready for council by early I July. Representatives of both the I cratic and Republican parties appeared at the hearing last night, along with a representative from the Radical 1 pendent Party, a coalition of liberáis formed last year. None of the ' men opposed making it easier for third parties to get on the ballots, but different views were evident on how easy it should be. Steingold, while noting that the committee has not taken an official vote yet, said he feit the general feeling of committee members leans towards liberalizing the restrictions for getting a place on ballots. Details on how much easier it should be made and on what procedures to use should none of three candidates receive a majority of votes still must be worked out, he said. The committee will next meet June 15 to discuss recommendations to be made to council. Steingold said that meeting will be open to the public, but will not be a public hearing. He said council will . probably have more hearings after receiving the committee's suggestions. By submitting a recommendation next 1 month, Steingold said the city should have time to decide whether or not a fall election should be held for changing the city charter election provisions.
