The contest for the Republican nomination for sheriff in the August primary election became a three-man race today when Clare M. LaFerier, a fortner undersheriff, announced his candidacy. LaFerier, 41, a native of Williamston, Mich., has served in various capacities in law enforcement agencies for more than 20 years and was second in command of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department in 1965-66 as undersheriff. LaFerier served as a sergeant with the Army provost marshal section in Europe during World War II and after discharge, became a city patrolman in Williamston. He was chief of that department when he left in 1948 to become a patrolman with the Ann Arbor Pólice Department. In 1955 he accepted a sergeant's rank with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department under the late Sheriff Erwin L. Klager. He served in that post as a desk sergeant until he was moved up to a captain's position by the incumbent sheriff, Douglas J. Harvey, in 1965. In the. same year he was promoted to the undersheriff 's position, which he held until resigning from the department in August, 1966. While with the Sheriff's Department, LaFerier completed instruction courses in traffic, driver training and marine law enforcement. Since leaving the Sheriff's Department, he has formed and headed the Washtenaw County Security Pólice, which serves business firms in Washtenaw and Wayne counties. He is president of that firm. In a statement accompanying hia announcement, LaFerier said: "I feel my experience of over 20 years, 14 of which were spent in supervisión of personnel and administration, qalifies me for the nomination for sheriff of Washtenaw County." The candidate is a member of various fraternal and social organizations. He lives at 1088 Lester, Ypsilanti Township, with his wife, Betty, and their two spns, Douglas and Leslie. LaFerier's bid for the GOP nomination is his first try at political office. Also seeking the Republican nomination are Stanley Dulgeroff, a University employé, and Clark Shelton, an Ann Arbor restaurant owner. Harvey has already announced his candidacy for nomination on the Democratie ticket. He is alone in the field for that party thus far.
