Thirty-four areat u d e n t s were named semifinalists today in the 1970-71 National Merit Scholarship competition. Included were 30 students in Ann Arbor high schools and four at Ypsilanti High School. Among the Ann Arbor semifinalists are 16 at Pioneer High School, 13 at Huron High School and one at St. Thomas High. The semifinalists now will compete with nearly 15,000 high school seniors from across the nation for about 3,000 Merit Scholarships, to be awarded next spring. Semifinalists must advance to finalist standing to be considered for. the Merit Scholarships. They become fin a lis ts by receiving the endorsement of their schools, substantiating their high performance on a second examination, and providing information about their achievements and interests. Winners of four-year Merit Scholarships may receive up to $1,500 a year for four college years depending on individual need. Winners of the National Merit $1,000 Scholarships will receive their nonrenewable onetime awards upon enrollment as full-time students in accredited U. S. colleges or universities. High school grades, accomplishment, leadership qualities, and extracurricular activities of the finalists, along with test scores, are evaluated in selecting Merit Scholarship winners.
