E. A. Jack Morris, 42, of 480(J Textile Rd., Pittsfield Township, has announced his candidacy for the Washtenaw County Commissioner's seat representing District 9 comprised of the city of Milan, and the townships of Pittsfield, Saline and York. The position is now held by Albert Bredernitz of 8275 Dell Rd., Saline Township. Bredernitz has not indicated yet whether he will seek another term. Both are Republicans. Morris is assistant coördinator of music for the Ann Arbor Public Schools and is the former managing secretary of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association and advisory consultant of the Bureau of School Services at the University. He is a member of the Pittsfield Township Planning Comjniission. Morris received his bachelor's degree from the Chicago Musical College, his master's from the University of Wyoming and did post-graduate work at the U-M. Morris has been a resident of Washtenaw County for 14 years and of Pittsfield Township for eight years. He is a member of St. Clare of Assisi Episcopal i Church in Ann Arbor. Morris and his wife have eight children. Here are the reasons for his candidacy: "The decisión to become a candidate was prompted by my awareness of the rapid growth and urbanization taking place within this county. Washtenaw County will soon become one large metropolitan área. District 9 is experiencing this growth and its inherent problems now. The population of Pittsfield Township increased 78 per cent between 1960 and 1970. The present figure will doublé within the next decade and probably by 1975. This rapid expansión within our district and the county, as a whole, must take place in an orderly manner with thoughtful planning and careful execution. As a member of the Pittsfield Township Planning Commission, [ am particularly sensitive to the problems caused by improper land use and development. I am also concerned that proper pólice and fire protection be afEorded to these áreas in the transitional stages between rural and urban settings. These services, and others, may well have to be the responsibility of the county or some regional guernmeut unit. "I have another reason for running for office at this time and that is to do what I can to overeóme the present polarization within our society. The generation gap between young and old, the lack of dialogue between the extreme left and right, the frightening militancy of both black and white, and the increasing number of povertystricken at our most affluent time in history all indícate our lack of concern and unwillingness to understand the problems of others. Those wishing to assume leadership roles in our society, must be willing to listen with an open and understanding mirid to the needs and desires of all. There are no simple answers to complex problems. I pledge myself to do whatever is necessary to seek solutions to form the foundation on which a unity may once again be established both locally and nationally. "There are other issues which I plan to bring out in my oneman campaign for this election. This campaign includes ringing as many doorbells as is humanly possible during the next eight weeks. I have chosen this means of bringing my program to the voters in order to hear and to jknow their views on these issues also."
