YPSILANTI - Dr James S. Magee has been named acting vice president for instruction at Eastern Michigan University. He will serve in the position which had been filled by Bruce K. Nelson, EMU President James Brickley said this morning. Nelson resigned last week after he and Brickley reached a mutual agreement. Nelson has been assigned to classroom teaching. Magee, who expects to hold the position for at least six 'months, while he sellection committee of the university's deans and administrators conducts a nationwide search, is chairman of the political scfence department. Brickley praised Magee, calling him "a scholar, a teacher and an administrator of unquestioned talent. The department heads at Eastern Michigan University are on the firing line. They stand between the administration and the delivery of instructional services to our students. As such, they are in a unique position to understand the problems of. administration and the needs of the students. As an acting Vice president of the instructional división, Dr. Magee will bnng a very keen insight to that position at a very critical time for that división." Brickley nor Magee ruled out the possibility that Magee could remain in the position. Brickley said both faculty and students would be involved in the screening of applicants. Brickley said Magee would be able to make major policy decisions but that policy change decisions would be" based on their urgency and ultímate effect on the new vice president. Magee, calïing himself a strong advocate of instructional development, said the faculty and students are "the heart of any university" and that he hoped "to be in the center of both groups working toward their greatest potential." He said "conflict is unavoidable but it is healthy because that is how ideas and concepts are revised." Brickley said he would make another personnel announcement tomorrow. When asked about a rumor that EMU's three vice presidents (including Nelson) would be fired, he replied, "In the way you are presenting it to me, I have to say it is inaccurate." '
